Spain's Digital Nomad Visa with family: who applies, and when

Your family does not have to wait for your Digital Nomad application to be approved before applying. Qualifying relatives can apply alongside you or join you later. Each person still needs their own application and evidence: being named in your household does not give them residence permission. Article 62.4 of Ley 14/2013 provides for both timings.

Start with the Digital Nomad Visa requirements for the person whose remote work will support the applications. Then look at each relative separately. A marriage certificate, a child's birth certificate and evidence that you support a parent answer different questions.

Which relatives can apply?Link to this section#

The law covers a spouse or partner in an analogous relationship, minor children, financially dependent adult children who have not formed their own family unit, and dependent parents or other relatives in the ascending line. Ley 14/2013, article 62.4.

For a spouse or minor child, begin with the civil records establishing the relationship. For an adult child or parent, the dependency evidence needs attention before you commit to a moving date. A birth certificate proves the family connection; it cannot show who pays living costs or why support is needed. Where a child is moving from an earlier relationship, check custody and consent at the same stage. UGE includes a requirement for the other parent's notarised permission for residence in the circumstances described in its minor-child section. Do not assume a letter consenting to a holiday covers a move to Spain.

An unregistered partnership can be considered. For an application to UGE, the unit handling these residence applications in Spain, its checklist asks for at least a continuous year of cohabitation immediately before applying. A couple with a child together does not need to prove that full year, but must still prove stable cohabitation. See the UGE checklist's partnership requirements.

Put the evidence in date order. Look for documents showing both names and the period you lived together, such as a joint lease and shared-account records. The checklist gives examples of combined evidence; check your proposed documents against it before paying to translate them.

Together or later: what changes?Link to this section#

Applying together makes sense when everyone's documents and travel plans are ready. The law says simultaneous family applications are also to be decided simultaneously. That does not tell you whether your consulate uses one appointment or several; check its booking instructions. Article 62.4.

A later application can fit a school term or a partner's notice period. It also creates another round of evidence. For a subsequent UGE application, the principal applicant must show current financial support for the enlarged household, including the preceding three months' payslips or invoices and matching bank evidence. Decide where each person will apply. A family member abroad follows the relevant consular visa procedure; an in-Spain residence application requires lawful presence as well as eligibility. The UGE FAQ distinguishes these routes. Your own presence in Spain does not establish your partner's right to apply there.

Consular paperwork also remains individual. For example, Bogotá's published teleworker instructions require a visa form for each applicant. Use the instructions for the office handling your family, including its document and appointment requirements.

Work and healthcare for your partnerLink to this section#

UGE confirms that a family residence authorisation permits both employment and self-employment. Your partner does not need a qualifying remote job of their own to apply as your family member. A filed application alone does not grant permission to start work. UGE FAQ, question 17.

Healthcare needs a separate check for each person. In particular, UGE's family checklist says an unregistered partner cannot rely on the principal applicant's Social Security beneficiary route and must show private health insurance. Work out the family file before ordering documentsLink to this section#

Write down who is applying, their relationship to the remote worker, where they live now and whether they intend to move together. Add any custody arrangements or dependency evidence that needs checking.
